Designing Fairy Prayer Lights with XIAO

The Prayer Circle is a wilderness workshop where indigenous ways of knowing meet the Tree of Knowledge. Arbor-spiritualities have long connected people with trees, stones, feathers, bones, twigs, acorns, and other elemental forms. Here, wilderness survival is extended beyond survival toward a relationship of peace with the elements.

The workshop explores the idea of light as a contemporary element of the sacred—not as a claim about any particular indigenous tradition, but as an invitation to experiment with technology, ecology, and contemplative practice.

Participants will design their own fairy prayer lights using a Seeed XIAO board, small solar cells, LEDs, and simple environmental sensors. The lights can become gentle markers around a wilderness prayer circle, tent, tree, or outdoor learning space.

Workshop: Make Your Own Fairy Prayer Light

Using a XIAO microcontroller, participants learn to:

• Build a small solar-powered LED light.
• Program patterns of light inspired by prayer, breathing, or natural rhythms.
• Add environmental sensing for temperature, light, weather, or movement.
• Create low-power lights suitable for tents, pathways, and outdoor installations.
• Experiment with wildlife observation without disturbing animals.
• Explore how a network of small lights can become an ecological sensorium for a wilderness site.

The finished lights can serve simultaneously as lanterns, wayfinding markers, prayer objects, and environmental observers.

The Sacred Tree

A garden solar lamp may hang from the sacred tree alongside the paraphernalia of the Prayer Circle: totems, stones, feathers, sacred bones, twigs, acorns, and other natural objects.

The technological element is deliberately modest. The XIAO does not replace the tree or the natural world; it becomes another way of listening to and interacting with the environment.
