The HSK mindfulness survival kit, is based on the book The Mindfulness Survival Kit, Five Essential Practices, by Thich Nhat Hanh.
There are essentially five mindfulness practices, of which Reverence For Life and Nourishment as Mindfulness Eating are relevant to Mindful Back-packing. We consider several readings from the book, followed by an open discussion, with a workbook.
The essential concrete practices are mindful breathing, sitting, walking, eating and sleeping…..
We end this blog post with meta-ethics and the discussion of semantics, ontology and epistemology and of course the meta-ethics of backpacking and the Buddhist philosophy of non-duality and the essential, meta ethical formulations of natural law and positive egotism.
WorkBook:
Mindful Walking , is a relaxed walking practice with 2-3 steps to the breath in or breath out or 3-4 steps to the breath in or breath out. In the reading we discuss, how the relaxation of mindful breathing, leads us to a relaxed state where we can add more steps to a deep mindful breath in or out and yet be mindful to the senses and the Buddha nature, the sounds of water, the forest, the ionic air and the smells and sounds.
Start with a small five minute walk, it could be up a staircase, down a hallway, in the skywalk or from one tree to the next. Add a camera to the walk, mindfully observing every observation and scene that speaks to you. Gradually increase this to an hour of hiking and then to backpacking.
Points to introspect.
1. The nature of mindful walking in the first five minutes.
2. Does mindfulness eliminate the fatigue of walking on a hike.
3. The cumulative, mindful experience, in a hike.
4. The baggage and backpacking, do you see a need for minimalism, what is the baggage, emotional and mental, you have accumulated, is backpacking the minimal baggage? Can you shed the excess flab?
Workbook:
A longer mindful walk on a hike, constitutes a hike of at least 1 hour, with a mindful perception of natural sounds, natural surroundings, and the buddha nature in the surroundings.
The baggage has been minimized and the backpack balanced to optimize the walk. While the realized have no baggage at all, eliminating all the metaphorical baggage, we as minimalists, need some of the professional baggage in our professional lives, thus implementing the practical Shambhala and practical Zen.
In this workbook, we use strava.com to log a manual log on a mindful hike, of at least one hour.
images and sounds are recorded using any media recorder, including bird sounds, forest sounds, and water sounds.
Note fatigue levels and mindful perception of the natural sounds, note the data on strava, to prove the practice of Zen Mindful Walking.
Practice the perception of the Buddha-nature, as you see a natural view at the moment, for the first time, without any viel of memory, past impressions and filters, in the Buddha-nature.
